What is TGNO? Why Teach? How Do I Apply? More: Teach Greater New Orleans Email: tgno@uno.edu |
What is Teach Greater New Orleans? Training and Support As a Teach Greater New Orleans practitioner, you will participate in thematic coursework, intensive field experiences, multiyear mentoring, peer assistance, and professional development. In order to rapidly prepare you for the classroom, this program requires a significant time investment on your part. Pre-service Training Training begins in the summer where you will attend 2 intensive courses that prepare you to be successful in the classroom. You will be taught by experienced public school educators and University of New Orleans faculty. During this training you will have ample opportunities to interact, collaborate, and network with program participants and university professors. The entire TGNO cohort will take the first summer mini-session as a group. In this course, you will learn general teaching methods such as classroom management, lesson planning, and instructional strategies for all learners. The second summer mini-session will give you an opportunity to focus more specifically on the subject you will be teaching in the fall. The TGNO cohort will break into four groups according to the certification you are seeking. You will build lesson plans that you can use in the fall and develop subject-specific strategies that will drive student achievement. TGNO practitioners have also built strong support networks with their peers during their summer classes. This pre-service training compacts a multitude of topics into two short months, so it is extremely demanding and intense. You should expect to be in classes all day Monday-Thursday in addition to meeting with your professors and other TGNO teachers. Year Long Support As a TGNO practitioner teacher, you will receive support from the university, the district, and your school. At your school you will be provided a mentor who will conduct classroom observations, peer observations, peer mentoring, and coaching. As a faculty member of your school and district, you will attend professional development conferences, workshops, and events organized by the district and school. Additionally, you will function as a member of a small cohort of TGNO program participants. Your cohort will consist of TGNO teachers working in similar subjects and schools. A university-based field advisor provides observations and feedback. TGNO teachers will also attend classes one night a week to understand the theory and practice involved in effective teaching. In addition to university class time, practitioner cohorts meet regularly during the academic year to support and develop your teaching skills. |
