How do I apply? Testing Schedule PRAXIS Requirements: Applicants must take and receive passing scores on PRAXIS I and II to begin the program. PRAXIS I is offered regularly. Check at www.ets.org/praxis for test site locations and test dates. Individuals with master's degrees or higher are exempt from taking PRAXIS I. Candidates who have earned an ACT composite score of 22 or a combined verbal and math SAT score of 1030 are exempt from taking the PRAXIS I. If you do not take and pass PRAXIS I and II, you will not have the opportunity to participate in the next cohort. We want to stress the importance of preparing for and taking these exams early. This preparation is especially important if you graduated from college a number of years ago. PRAXIS I: PRAXIS I is available in two formats, computer-based or paper-based, each measuring the basic academic skills vital to all teacher candidates. Individuals with Master's degrees are exempt from the Praxis I. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you take the computer based test, since your score report unofficial scores (not writing score) will be available immediately. There are three sections to the PRAXIS I test, which can be taken separately or during the same testing session:
PRAXIS II: Practitioner teachers must also pass the appropriate content-specific PRAXIS II exam in the content area in which they will pursue certification. This exam does not contain any education related questions. It is purely a test of your content knowledge in a specific subject such as math or science. Certification is available for Middle School Math and science, Special Education, or Secondary Math, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, General Science or Physics. The Praxis II content area test that you select determines what you are eligible to teach. For example, if you want to teach in grades 4-8 for math, you would take the middle school math test. In selecting the Praxis II, please keep in mind the crtitical shortage areas are math, science, and special education. Historically, the most available positions with our partner school districts have been in these areas. If you want to teach special education, you would select the test in the subject area that you wish to teach. For example, if you want to teach elementary special education, you would take the elementary Praxis II content area exam. If you want to teach special education at the high school level, you would select a secondary content area exam such as math, science, or English. Please note that the state of Louisiana is in the process of revising their Praxis requirements and changing qualifying exams and scores. These may change at any time so please check back often for updates on testing requirements.
Testing Locations: The PRAXIS I and PRAXIS II are offered at The University of New Orleans. The computer version of the PRAXIS I is offered on an on-going basis. We highly recommend that you take the computer based Praxis I test, as your unofficial scores will appear immediately for the math and reading portions. The exams are given on the UNO campus at Business Administration 216. To schedule an exam call (504) 280-TEST. These exams are also offered at the Prometric Testing Center in Metairie.
