What is Teach Greater New Orleans? Program Overview The public schools in Greater New Orleans have struggled to meet high academic standards. Although over 75% of our public schools have been rated academically below average or unacceptable, we have seen a trend of improvement. With the commitment and support of our community, this trend can continue. Studies have shown that the most important factor in increasing student achievement is a high quality teacher. By placing our area's most accomplished leaders and professionals in our highest need classrooms, tremendous gains will be possible in New Orleans metro area public schools. Teach Greater New Orleans allows outstanding individuals with a bachelor's degree and demonstrated past achievement to teach full time under a special license while obtaining certification. Teach Greater New Orleans participants need no prior experience or coursework in education; they need a commitment to increasing student achievement and the potential to be an effective educator. Teach Greater New Orleans participants will have the opportunity to be a part of systemic change in our public schools. As a Transition to Teaching program at the University of New Orleans, Teach Greater New Orleans practitioner teachers can be a part of an educational renaissance. This highly selective program answers the state's challenge to improve teacher quality and ensure that qualified, enthusiastic teachers are in every classroom. Teach Greater New Orleans provides rigorous training from esteemed university and public school faculty, supports teacher candidates through their first year of teaching, and provides services until participants obtain teacher certification. While half of our students fail to meet standards at the fourth and eighth grade levels, the need for change in our public schools is clear.
